How to Use WeChat Pay with a Foreign Bank Card

WeChat Pay is useful because it lives inside WeChat, the app many people in China already use for chat, groups, mini programs, tickets, and daily services. This guide keeps the setup practical: find Wallet, add your international card, verify your identity, test payment, and know when to use Alipay or cash instead.

How to Use WeChat Pay with a Foreign Bank Card

Start here

Quick answer

  • Open WeChat, go to Me > Services > Wallet, add your international bank card, and complete identity verification with your passport if prompted.
  • Use WeChat Pay by scanning a merchant QR code or showing your payment code for the merchant to scan.
  • Keep Alipay, RMB cash, or a physical card as backup because foreign-card WeChat Pay may not work in every mini program, merchant category, or personal-payment situation.

Requirements

  • WeChat installed, updated, and logged in.
  • Phone number that can receive SMS or account security messages.
  • Passport or other supported identity document.
  • Supported international bank card with overseas and online payments enabled.
  • Backup payment method: Alipay, RMB cash, or physical card.

Step-by-step guide

1

Prepare your card and passport

Have your international bank card and passport ready before opening Wallet. Official Weixin Pay guidance says overseas users can use a passport or other supported identity document to set up Weixin Pay and link an international credit or debit card.

Newer 2026 Beijing guidance lists seven supported payment-service brands, but always confirm the current list inside WeChat before publishing.

2

Download or update WeChat

Install or update WeChat on the phone you will use in China. Register or log in with a phone number you can still access while travelling.

A stable WeChat account matters. Brand-new or security-flagged accounts may face extra checks before payment works smoothly.

3

Find Wallet inside WeChat

Open Me > Services > Wallet. In some app versions or regions, the menu may say Pay and Services, Wallet, or Weixin Pay. If the entry is missing, use the activation path shown in the official guide.

If Wallet is hidden, try Me > Settings > General > Tools > Weixin Pay, then tap Enable.

The usual path is Me > Services > Wallet.
4

Add a card from Wallet

In Wallet, choose Add a Card. Read the Weixin Pay user service agreement and privacy policy, then continue into identity and card setup.

If WeChat asks for a payment password, remember it is separate from your phone unlock code and your WeChat login password.

5

Fill identity details and upload passport if asked

Enter your identity information exactly as it appears on your passport. If WeChat sends a passport-upload notification, use a clear full-page passport photo with readable text.

Do not rush this step. Name order, blurry images, cropped document edges, and missed SMS checks are common reasons setup gets stuck.

6

Confirm card limits and fees

Older official guide images show foreign-card payment limits and a 3% fee above RMB 200. Newer 2026 Beijing guidance says every transaction under RMB 200 is fee-free, and first-time linked international-card users may receive a 60-day waiver on daily transactions under RMB 1,000, with conditions.

Treat fee and limit screenshots as draft references. Current in-app terms should be checked before publishing.

7

Pay by QR code

For merchant QR codes, tap + and Scan, then scan the merchant's code and confirm the amount. For cashier scanning, open your payment code and show it to the merchant.

Before confirming, check which card is selected. If one card fails, try another card or switch to Alipay.

Show your payment code when the merchant scans you

Many supermarkets, chain stores, and transport counters scan your payment code instead of asking you to scan theirs. Open the payment code, let the cashier scan it, and wait for the success screen before leaving.

Do not share screenshots of your payment code. Use the live code inside WeChat.

Troubleshooting

Common problems and fixes

  • Wallet is missing: enable Weixin Pay from WeChat settings or update the app.
  • Card rejected: your issuer may block international online payments, 3-D Secure may fail, or the card brand/product may not be eligible.
  • Passport verification fails: check name order, clear photo quality, full passport page visibility, and phone verification.
  • Payment works in one place but not another: foreign-card WeChat Pay may fail in some mini programs, personal QR codes, merchant categories, or account-risk situations.
  • You cannot send red packets or transfer money like a local user: foreign-card accounts may support merchant payment but not all wallet/social payment functions.
  • Fee appears on larger payments: official Tencent guidance waives fees for transactions at or below RMB 200, and 2026 Beijing guidance describes newer fee waivers, but current payment-page terms control the final charge.

Important warnings

  • WeChat Pay is useful, but it is not the same as having a full mainland China wallet. Transfers, red packets, balance use, and some personal payments can be limited for foreign-card users.
  • Current card support and fee waivers may change. Check the payment page and WeChat's current in-app terms before final publication.
  • Do not send passport photos or payment-code screenshots through unofficial helper accounts.

Best route and backup plan

Recommended route

  • Set up Alipay first if you need the easiest tourist payment path, then set up WeChat Pay as your second rail.
  • Use WeChat Pay when the merchant, mini program, group, or social situation is already inside WeChat.
  • Test a small merchant payment before using WeChat Pay for time-sensitive taxis, restaurants, train tickets, or attraction reservations.

Backup options

  • Use Alipay as your main backup payment app.
  • Carry RMB cash for arrival, taxis, small vendors, and account-risk moments.
  • Use a physical international card at hotels, tourist sites, and larger stores that display the right card-network logo.
  • Use Trip.com, Klook, or another international platform if a WeChat mini-program booking payment fails.

Other ways to pay

  • Alipay: often easier for first-time foreign visitors and a strong backup.
  • Physical bank card: useful at hotels, larger stores, and some tourist sites.
  • RMB cash: useful for emergencies and app-failure moments.

FAQ

Can foreigners use WeChat Pay with a foreign bank card?

Yes. Tencent and Chinese government sources confirm that overseas users can link supported international credit or debit cards to Weixin Pay/WeChat Pay for payments in mainland China.

Do I need a Chinese bank account?

No for basic merchant payments. A Chinese bank account gives fuller wallet functions, but foreign visitors can usually link supported overseas cards for QR payments.

Do I need a Chinese phone number?

Not necessarily. Official guides say users can register or sign in with a phone number, and foreign numbers can work, but the number must be able to receive verification messages.

Which foreign cards work with WeChat Pay?

Older official guidance listed Visa, Mastercard, Diners Club, and JCB. Newer 2026 Beijing guidance lists VISA, MasterCard, American Express, Discover Global Network, JCB, Diners Club, and UnionPay. Check the current WeChat card-linking screen before publishing.

Is there a fee for using a foreign card?

Tencent's official 2023 guidance says fees are waived for single transactions at or below RMB 200, subject to the payment page. Beijing's 2026 guidance adds that first-time linked international-card users may get a 60-day waiver for daily transactions under RMB 1,000, with limits. Always check the payment page.

Can I send red packets or transfer money to friends?

Do not assume so. Foreign-card WeChat Pay is mainly useful for merchant payments. Red packets, transfers, balance features, and personal payments may require fuller identity and local wallet support.

What if Wallet or Services is missing?

Update WeChat first. Then check Me > Settings > General > Tools > Weixin Pay and tap Enable. Official guides also mention activating Weixin Pay by scanning an official activation QR code.

Should I use WeChat Pay or Alipay first?

For most first-time visitors, set up Alipay first because it is often more straightforward for tourist payment setup. Then add WeChat Pay because many mini programs, groups, and social situations happen inside WeChat.
