How to Use Shared Bikes in China

Shared bikes are ideal for the last 1-3 kilometers: metro station to hotel, attraction to restaurant, riverside route, campus, hutong, or park edge. The key is to use the app flow that works for foreigners, then end the ride only after the app confirms the bike is locked and parked correctly.

How to Use Shared Bikes in China

Quick answer

  • For most foreign visitors, the easiest first try is HelloBike/Hellobike through Alipay, because Shanghai's official guide confirms HelloBike can be rented through Alipay and Beijing's official new-arrival guide shows shared-bike use through Alipay.
  • You will usually scan the QR code on the bike, authorize payment or deposit/credit, wait for the lock to open, ride, park in an allowed zone, physically lock the bike, and confirm the ride ended in the app.
  • Do not walk away just because the bike is parked. If the app still shows an active ride, you may keep getting charged.

Requirements

  • Required: Alipay or WeChat Pay with a working payment method.
  • Required: phone data, enough battery, and location permission for the bike mini program.
  • Recommended: passport verification completed in Alipay/WeChat if prompted.
  • Recommended: Amap route open and destination parking area checked before riding.
  • Possible: Chinese phone number if a specific brand asks for SMS or local account verification.
  • Optional: helmet, especially if you are unfamiliar with Chinese city traffic.

Step-by-step guide

1

Choose the easiest bike brand first

Most cities have a mix of HelloBike/Hellobike blue bikes, Meituan yellow bikes, and DiDi Qingju green or turquoise bikes. Shanghai's official guide lists Hellobike, Meituan, and Qingju as major platforms. If you are new, try HelloBike through Alipay first, then switch brand if the app asks for a Chinese phone number, Chinese ID, deposit, or payment method you cannot complete.

Availability differs by city, district, and street. Some bikes visible on the sidewalk may not be rentable by your account.

2

Open the bike service inside Alipay or WeChat

In Alipay, use search for HelloBike, Hellobike, 哈啰, 哈啰骑行, 单车, or 骑行. In WeChat or Meituan, look for 美团单车. For Qingju, use DiDi or 青桔. Official Shanghai guidance says HelloBike can be rented via the HelloBike app or Alipay, Meituan via Meituan app, and Qingju via DiDi Qingju or DiDi.

If the app UI is Chinese, use Alipay translation, phone screenshot translation, or copy the Chinese service name.

3

Complete first-time authorization

The first ride may ask for phone login, location permission, payment authorization, deposit, credit-score authorization, or identity details. Do not rush this screen. Check whether a foreign passport option appears, whether the payment method is the card/balance you expect, and whether any deposit or monthly-card offer is being selected automatically.

Fees and deposit rules change by brand, city, and account. Check the app screen before confirming.

4

Scan the QR code and wait for the lock

Stand beside the bike and scan the QR code on the frame, handlebar, rear lock, or under the seat. Confirm the bike number if the app shows one. Wait until the lock clicks open and the app starts the ride. If the lock does not open, do not force it; report the bike or choose another one.

If the same bike fails twice, move to another bike instead of repeatedly scanning.

A successful scan is not enough; the lock must actually open.
5

Check the bike before riding into traffic

Before you leave, squeeze both brakes, check the tires, adjust the seat if possible, and make sure the handlebar is straight. Avoid damaged bikes, bikes with flat tires, bikes blocked by other bikes, and bikes parked in awkward road positions. Open Amap if you need a bike-lane route.

Shared bikes do not usually include helmets. Ride conservatively if you are new to local traffic.

6

Ride legally and avoid risky roads

Use bike lanes where available, obey traffic lights, avoid expressways and roads where bikes are banned, and slow down around pedestrians, delivery riders, parked cars, buses, and turning vehicles. Do not ride with two adults on one bike, and do not use a bike if you are unsure how to ride safely in mixed traffic.

Large tourist districts and campuses can be easier first rides than major arterial roads.

7

Park in the allowed zone and lock the bike

At the destination, park in a painted bike area, roadside bike cluster, or the zone shown by the app. Beijing's official guide says to park in designated areas marked by white road-side circles and then return the bike in the app. Many cities use electronic parking zones; if you park outside, the app may refuse to end the ride or charge a management fee.

Do not block sidewalks, ramps, metro exits, fire passages, storefronts, or tactile paving.

8

Confirm the ride has ended

After locking the bike, look at the app. You should see ride ended, payment due, paid, or a completed-order screen. If the app still shows an active timer, move the bike into a valid zone, relock, refresh location, or contact customer service. Do not leave while the timer is still running.

Take a screenshot if the app says you returned the bike but the order still looks active.

Troubleshooting

Common problems and fixes

  • Chinese phone number required: try HelloBike through Alipay first, another brand, or a standalone app that accepts your number.
  • Payment or deposit fails: check Alipay/WeChat Pay setup, switch card/balance, turn off VPN if payment behaves strangely, or use a different brand.
  • Bike will not unlock: choose another bike and report the fault in the app.
  • Outside service area: the bike may not be usable from that location; walk to a nearby cluster or scan another brand.
  • Cannot end ride: move into the marked parking zone, lock again, refresh the app, and contact support if still active.
  • Charged after parking: save screenshots, bike number, location, and return time before contacting in-app customer service.

Important warnings

  • Do not assume every bike brand accepts foreign accounts equally well.
  • Do not ride on roads where bicycles are prohibited.
  • Do not park randomly; wrong parking can block the app return and may create fees.
  • Do not leave until the app shows the ride has ended.
  • Prices, deposit rules, monthly cards, and foreign-card behavior can change by city and account.

Best route and backup plan

Recommended route

  • Set up Alipay first.
  • Search HelloBike/Hellobike or 哈啰骑行 inside Alipay.
  • Scan a blue bike, authorize payment carefully, ride a short test route, then confirm return.
  • Use Meituan or Qingju if HelloBike is unavailable near you.

Backup options

  • Try another brand: HelloBike blue, Meituan yellow, or Qingju green/turquoise.
  • Use Alipay first if WeChat or Meituan setup is too China-localized.
  • Walk to the next metro station, take a taxi/ride-hailing car, or use the metro for longer distances.
  • Ask a hotel, local friend, or staff member to help read the parking-zone message.

Other ways to pay

  • Walk for short distances under 1 kilometer.
  • Metro for longer cross-city routes.
  • Didi/Amap/Alipay ride-hailing when roads, weather, luggage, or safety make cycling a poor choice.
  • City transport apps such as SH MaaS in Shanghai where supported.
  • Hotel rental bike or guided cycling tour for sightseeing.

FAQ

Can foreigners use shared bikes in China?

Often yes, but success depends on the brand, city, app account, phone number, identity verification, and payment method. HelloBike through Alipay is usually a good first route to try.

Which shared bike color should I scan?

Blue is often HelloBike/Hellobike, yellow is often Meituan Bike, and green/turquoise is often DiDi Qingju. Colors can vary, so trust the app/brand name on the bike.

Do I need a Chinese phone number?

Sometimes. Some users report HelloBike through Alipay working without a Chinese number, while other services may ask for SMS or local account steps. A Chinese number makes local services easier.

Do I need to pay a deposit?

Maybe. Some accounts qualify for deposit-free or credit authorization, while others may see a deposit or payment authorization. Check the app screen before confirming.

How much do shared bikes cost?

Fees are usually low and time-based, but they vary by brand, city, and account. Beijing's official guide gives Meituan Bike as an example, but you should follow the current price shown in the app.

Where can I park a shared bike?

Use designated bike parking areas, painted zones, roadside bike clusters, or the app's allowed parking zone. If the app says parking is invalid, move the bike before ending the ride.

What if the app keeps charging after I locked the bike?

Do not walk away. Reopen the app, refresh location, check the lock, move into an allowed zone, and contact customer service. Screenshot the bike number, location, and app status.

Is it safe to ride shared bikes in Chinese cities?

It can be safe on suitable roads and bike lanes, but traffic habits may differ from what you know. Start with quiet areas, avoid major roads, and do not ride if you are uncomfortable.
