Can You Visit Hangzhou Visa-Free for 10 Days? The 240-Hour Transit Rule Without the Fog

Hangzhou can work very well under China's 240-hour visa-free transit policy. The National Immigration Administration lists Hangzhou Xiaoshan Airport among Zhejiang's eligible ports, and the policy lets qualified travelers stay for no more than 240 hours in the approved areas.

The important word is transit. You are not simply entering China visa-free because you like Hangzhou. You must be traveling from one country or region through mainland China to a different third country or region, with the onward trip already arranged. Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan can count as separate regions for routing, but the itinerary still needs to make sense to airline and border staff.

Bring the basics in a form that is easy to show: your physical passport, proof that the passport is valid long enough, and a confirmed onward ticket with a date inside the 240-hour window. NIA's official conditions say eligible travelers must hold a valid international travel document, meet third-country entry requirements, and hold interline tickets or other proof for travel to a third country or region.

Do not hide the logic of your route. A clean example is Los Angeles -> Hangzhou -> Seoul, or London -> Hangzhou -> Hong Kong. A weak example is Seoul -> Hangzhou -> Seoul, because that looks like a round trip, not transit. If your airline check-in agent is unsure, calm documentation matters more than confident vibes.

The safe planning habit is to treat your permitted area as a real boundary, not a suggestion. Hangzhou tourism materials describe Zhejiang as included under the 240-hour policy, and the classic foreign-visitor route often combines Hangzhou with nearby Shanghai, Suzhou, or other Yangtze Delta stops. Still, the official NIA permitted-area table is the authority, and it can change.

For most Western travelers, the clean version is simple: use Hangzhou as the soft landing, add West Lake, Lingyin, Longjing tea villages, perhaps Shaoxing or Wuzhen if your schedule allows, and only add Shanghai or Jiangsu if your route and permitted-area reading are clear. Do not book an ambitious domestic detour before checking the current table.

Use a normal tourist visa if Hangzhou is the main destination of a China trip, if you will return to the same country or region you arrived from, if you want more time than 240 hours, or if your plan includes areas outside the current permitted stay zone. Also use the correct visa if you will work, study, report news, or do anything that needs prior approval.

A tourist visa is less romantic than a visa-free headline, but it gives you more freedom and fewer airport conversations. If your dream route is Hangzhou -> Huangshan -> Chengdu -> Beijing, do not squeeze it into transit logic. Get the visa and enjoy the trip properly.

In China, foreigners need accommodation registration. If you stay at a hotel, the hotel normally handles it when you check in with your passport. If you stay in a private apartment, with friends, or in a less standard setup, ask clearly how registration will be handled and whether you need to visit a local police station.

For a low-friction Hangzhou arrival, book a hotel that regularly handles foreign passports, keep your passport available at check-in, and save your hotel name and address in Chinese. This is especially useful if immigration, taxi drivers, or ride-hailing support ask where you are staying.
